Sowing Seeds, Growing Community

"I learned about planting different vegetables in the same row and that they support each other in growing, something I had never really thought about. Now before all this, I was no gardener of vegetables, I did enjoy taking care of flowers around my house inside and out. But this year my wife and I committed to raised beds and grew two very large watermelons and a ton of cucumbers and sun drop tomatoes (which my kid eats pretty much every day)". “My family thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Williams Family farm. We learned new things, had a chance to get our hands dirty and took home a new enthusiasm to try it ourselves. My child and I are planning to grow a small garden of our own this spring!” Alyssa - Friends & Family Experience

Harvesting Peanuts on a rainy day!
"Spent half day at Williams City Farm ––the weather was horrible ! Chilly and Wet- however spending time at Williams City Farm was absolutely amazing and made up for the rainy weather.
Such a large variety of food in this garden. It is PACKED with delicious and nutritious foods! Not being a ‘green’ thumb at all, Ms. Williams encouraged me to try to grow something of my own- I have not; but “maybe”  one day. The time spent there was nothing sort of ENLIGHTENING! FUN! FRUITFUL!
Anyone should surely take the opportunity to visit! Ms. Williams is definitely holding up to the motto  - Sowing seeds Growing Community – Wishing her much continued success!!!"

"My daughter and I had a great time at Williams City farm.  The variety of food was amazing! We learned a lot about growing certain foods too. Had the pleasure of cooking the kale at home! The owner is doing a wonderful job in the community.
Keep it up"  Rodney - Friends & Family Experience

"In the fall of 2020, I visited the Williams City Farm and was given a tour, as well as an opportunity to learn about harvesting beans, collards, peanuts, okra, strawberries and many more foods. The tour Shana offered me was casual and completely engaging from start to finish. Shana’s teaching style is led by curiosity on the part of her student (me!) and as I asked questions, Shana offered knowledge and stories that kept me interested and wanting to learn more. Before I knew it, I was crouched down on the ground investigating lima beans and determining if they were ready to harvest or not by their color and texture. My previous interactions with lima beans had only been from a can or a freezer bag, and I was having a great time! While I was there, a gentleman and his grandson stopped by to inquire about free food, and with wonderful warmth and ease, Shana provided the pair with several bags of fresh vegetables and ideas on preparation. I am familiar with her work with The Boys and Girls Club, as well as students across Richmond."  Liz P. - St. Thomas Food Pantry
